Eight Terrorists, Including Three Commanders, Killed in Dera Ismail Khan Operation

Security forces killed eight militants, including three commanders, in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Dera Ismail Khan district on October 4, according to Radio Pakistan, citing security officials. The figures could not be independently verified.

What officials say happened

Security officials said all eight of those killed belonged to Fitna al-Khawarij and that three of them were key commanders, who were not named. Forces recovered foreign currency and a large quantity of weapons and ammunition, ARY News reported, citing security sources. Radio Pakistan said the operation was carried out under the Azm-e-Istehkam vision.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the security forces and said the government would continue operations until terrorism is eliminated, Minute Mirror reported.

The Fitna al-Khawarij label

Fitna al-Khawarij is the term Pakistani state communications use for the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Azm-e-Istehkam is the government's counter-terrorism framework.

Recent violence in the district

The operation came eight days after a suicide bomber struck a police checkpoint near Darazinda in the same district on September 26, killing at least 11 people in an attack the TTP claimed, an attack we covered at the time.

The wider picture

The Center for Research and Security Studies reported that violence-linked fatalities in Pakistan rose 83 percent in the third quarter of 2026 over the previous quarter, a report we covered earlier this week. Balochistan accounted for most of the increase, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 556 deaths in the quarter. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also at the centre of a political dispute between the federal government and the provincial PTI administration over a possible emergency or governor's rule, as we reported when the consultations began.

No group had publicly responded to the military's account of the Dera Ismail Khan operation as of this writing.
